  • A horrible yet honorable story

I recognize that the news is never going to cover this story. So here’s it’s shot at getting out there. I received this email from a person in our community today. Most people would know her as a protagonist. I know her as someone with a deep sense of justice for our schools and the people in her life.

So here is her story from today. I think you’ll like it.

I want to tell you about a horrible incident that happened to me today….somewhere there is a lesson to be learned in this story, so please bear with me:

I pulled into the Meijer parking lot on 26 and Van Dyke to buy some cough syrup for my daughter and a few cans of cat food.  While I was getting my coupons out (gotta love those coupons!), I sat in my car with the car engine off.  A man was exiting his car one spot over directly across from me.  While he was exiting his vehicle, an older woman attempted to pull into the spot directly across from me next to the man exiting his vehicle.  He quickly closed his door and waited for her to pull in….she almost hit his car, she was within inches of his vehicle sideways.

He opened his door and began yelling at the lady (I later found out her name) and telling her to back out before she hit him.  She didn’t move…he kept yelling.  I got out of my car and said to the dude, ‘why don’t you try to help her instead of yelling at her?’ and I walked up to the lady…she was a senior citizen who was shaking with her hands on the steering wheel.  I asked her if she was okay, and she said the guy was scaring her and she turned off her car because the steering wheel locked up.  I asked her if she would restart the car and I would help her unlock the steering wheel and get the car into the parking space.

She was visibly upset, shaking and staring at the man who was out of his car by this time and yelling every profanity you can imagine, not only at her, but at me for being a ‘do gooder’ (and that was the nicest thing he said, believe me…his language was worse than a sailor, much worse than anything that I have ever hear from any human being in my lifetime and for those of you that know me, that’s pretty bad!).

When she restarted her engine, the guy got of his car and got in between her car and his – literally inches.  I asked him to move and he said no, she was going to hit his car and I explained to him that if her car jerked forward she would take off his kneecaps and he said good then he could sue her sorry old ass and get her inheritance!  He did move and leaned against his car mocking her as she tried to get the car moved into the space, which she did successfully shaking and in tears!

Once out of harms way, he hailed a stream of profanity at both her and I, going off on how how old people shouldn’t be driving and she should have her keys taken away from her…he began to walk away and I called him back to apologize to the lady and to me.  He told me to &()@ myself, asked what kind of C*&@ helps old people and to mind my own business!!!! I told him to return so I could call the police and he said for what…thank goodness the Meijers security guards were watching this all on their in-store cameras and came out to assist!

I called the police… she was in her car visibly shaken and they arrived while the guy was still spewing his horrible language.  The police asked what was going on; I told them my version, she told them her version and the Meijers security told them what they had seen and then heard in the parking lot once they were on scene.  The police officer then talked to the dude…they did a breathalyser on him and arrested him for DUI and disorderly conduct and hailed his ass off to jail!

The victim and I drove down to the police department to file witness reports while they were towing his car away and when I arrived at the police station the guy was still going at me and her for being every female word you can think of that is not positive!  The victim is 87 years old, her husband passed away 35 years ago and she prays everyday that she will not harm anyone, even if she goes for a walk, with her mouth or her actions (I need to learn alot from Geraldine!).  The dude is 75 years old…spewing that old people shouldn’t be driving!!!!

He was slammed with a DUI and a disorderly in public charge, locked up for 12/24 hours and I also asked to have another charge brought against him for harassment of me and Geraldine.  The statute is VERBAL SEXUAL HARASSMENT and SWEARING IN A PUBLIC VENUE.  We are both going to appear in court in June when he is charged, but at least he is locked up tonight for awhile anyway.  The officer told me that the dude has a previous criminal history, he could not say what it was for confidentiality reasons, but the guy has been in trouble before…lovely eh?

I drove her back to her car, we did our grocery shopping together and we sat in the food court until I could get in touch with her son, who assured me he would come by tonight and check on his mom…he already called to tell me he checked on her on his way home and she is still flustered, but doing okay!

I warn my kids everyday to watch out for the lunatics and I thank my lucky stars that I was there when this all took place with her.  I could only picture my daughter or my mother being harassed by the dude, and my heart broke!  How could anyone stand by and watch a defenseless old woman be harassed by a dude so disrespectfully?

We all need tolerance, patience and empathy….this victim is now my friend…I called her tonight to make sure she is okay and we are having lunch next week…I need to learn alot from her….please take the time with older people, have the patience with the young and the old cause we all will be there one day (hopefully!).

  • 13 Years Later

13 yearsKristen and I have been going out 13 years. (OK, we’ve been married almost 11 years… but we’re still dating.) I love telling our story because it’s pretty unusual these days.

Kristen and I met when we were almost 19 years old. After a really awkward and unmemorable blind date Kristen and I finally had our first real date in May 1995. It happened spontaneously as I asked Kristen out… thinking she would say something about the weekend… but she said, “Sure, I’m not doing anything right now. Let’s go out.” Since I’ve never been accused of being a plan man, this was perfect for me as I was able to improv a little.

Needless to say we got lost. We jumped on the el and went the wrong way towards O’hare. For entertainment on our long train ride I read Dr. Seuss books to Kristen. While I acted out all the voices and made her giggle with my stupidity we lost track of where we were going. When the blue line ended 25 miles out of the way… I suddenly realized our mistake. The only problem was that I didn’t have enough change to correct the mistake! So, on our first date Kristen learned about my “Live like JFK rule.” (I rarely carry cash and depend on debit cards, even then.)

An hour later we arrived at the airport. Why the airport? Well, I had been convinced that O’hare had an observation deck where we could watch planes taxi and take off. I was wrong. But it didn’t matter. She was sold on my sexiness and Dr. Seuss voices.

A true test of how things were going came from a classic Adam corny joke. As we were wandering around O’hare we rode the escalator up to the 2.5 billion check-in desks. As we were walking through we walked past all the placards that said “International” and “Domestic.” I said, “Did you know that the domestic lines are just for married people?” Kristen said, “Really?” And I was in love.

I can’t get her anymore as she ignores 99% of what I say. But we’re still in love.

  • Tax returns

tax refundWe’re a late filing family. I filed at 10:15 PM on April 15th. I’m happy to report that we got our state refund today. It came at the perfect time! Between that and the relief check we are, for lack of a better term, relieved.

  • Marko busted: The Pinnacle of Loserocity

If you’re in youth ministry, you know Marko. He’s the President of Youth Specialties and an all around fun guy. This spring he challenged youth workers to join him in a contest they created called, “Are you a bigger loser than Marko?” It’s a take-off on the hit show… and a bunch of people did it.

Well, last week it was announced that Marko had actually won his own contest. Yesterday, this video appeared on Marko’s blog.

OK, that’s just funny! It seems like what they are really doing is announcing more winners. But I like that they didn’t just say… “Uh, we’re going to give these people prizes.” Instead the produced a very cool video announcing the same thing.

  • What is Billy Ray Thinking?

hannah montanaLike a Nascar race we’ve all watched Hannah Montana and asked the same question: Will this girl be able to survive the weight of pressure she’ll face? Will her Christian upbringing be enough to keep her out of the tabloids? Will her famous daddy help her avoid doing something really, really stupid? Or will she turn out just like Christina and Brittany and all the other child pop stars gone weird. (Can you say, Michael Jackson?)

Sadly, the 15 car pile up is happening currently and we’re all there to watch. With cameras ready, daddy present, and handlers encouraging… 15 year old Miley Cyrus took off her top and posed for Vanity Fair. (The 13 year old boys version of Playboy.)
And every sick, perverted 40 year old man in the country will take notice. The white hot $300 tickets to her show will now start to “go Brittany” as grown men try to get close to her. Sure she wasn’t naked. She didn’t show anything. But it was a very seductive and sexual pose.

My honest reaction is simple. If a man in my church allowed his 15 year old daughter to be photographed like that… much less for a national magazine shoot… I’d call the police. Seriously. It’s sick. To quote Juno’s dad, “Next time I see that kid I’ll punch him right in the wiener.”

It’s not too late Cyrus family. Admit your mistake now and vow to guard your daughter’s body and heart into the future. Fix it now… the public will only want more. Commit to stopping this.

    Thoughts?

p.s. I was going to post the pictures here. But I decided I didn’t want the nasty men looking for kiddy porn on my site.

  • Making videos for ministry

cameraIt’s safe to say that I make videos for ministry. On average, I make two. Generally I make the “bumper video” that comes just before the sermon and then there is a wild card project that comes up for one of the other things we are doing at Romeo. I’ve made videos for our kids ministry, student ministry, church services, marriage ministry, websites, on and on.

So how do we do it?

    • It starts with the end result in mind. We ask the question: “What does this video need to communicate?” before we think of the ideas that go into it.
    • We brainstorm the concept. Will it be funny? Will it be dramatic? Will it be shocking? Will it be thought provoking?
    • We decide how much time its worth. Several months ago I spent 5 hours on a video that was less than 1 minute long and we used 1 time. It was awesome… but it wasn’t worth the time. So now we spend time time deciding the importance of the video. I spent 30+ hours on a video a couple months back and it was totally worth it.
    • We filter ideas based on time… including edit time.
    • We sketch out the videos time line. This is fluid when we go to actually shooting the video, but at this point it helps to do a sketch to determine stuff for the rest of the steps.
    • We agree on a time to shoot the video. Getting this scheduled is important so that it doesn’t happen the day before we need it!
    • I map out what I’ll need for the shoot. Video and sound equipment, people, props, permission, stuff like that.
    • We shoot the video. Once we get on site or set up… the video tends to change a lot. But agreeing on what to communicate and the sketch of the shoot ahead of time is pretty huge.
    • I edit the movie. The big decision is… to use iMovie or Adobe Premiere? That depends entirely on the type of video we’re creating. Most bumper videos are simple so I do them in iMovie. If I need a video with effects and layers and a lot of those details really matter… Premiere it is.
    • I publish the movie. 9 out of 10 times I publish it to YouTube so I can show it to a couple of people before making the final version for use in our ministry.
    • I premier it. There is nothing quite as exciting as an audience seeing your idea on the big screen for the first time.

For those who do video in their ministry, how do you do it differently?

  • What do you want?

Are you seeking great things for yourself, instead of seeking to be a great person? God wants you to be in a much closer relationship with Himself than simply receiving His gifts— He wants you to get to know Him. Even some large thing we want is only incidental; it comes and it goes. But God never gives us anything incidental. There is nothing easier than getting into the right relationship with God, unless it is not God you seek, but only what He can give you.

  • 30% taxes on Google Adwords

adsenseNormally I don’t pay that much attention to what we make on Google ads. But early this morning I was checking some account balances and I noticed I received a payment from Google Adwords.

I logged into my Adwords account to see some stats and such and then I looked at the payment. More than 30% of what we earned was taken out as taxes. That’s a lot of taxes.

Is there any way I could figure that tax rate into my earnings per thousand impressions? (Our standard for measuring the value of advertising.)

    That’s crazy-super high taxes, don’t you think?

  • Chirp!

ChirpRight now our house is a little annoying to be in. You need to know that we live in an old house, built in 1871. For those of you outside of Romeo I’ll explain our town to you like this. Have you ever driven through and old town, gone down Main Street and slowed down to admire the Victorian homes? I live in that neighborhood. Romeo is one of those towns with homes dating back to the mid-1800s.

Over the years our house has acquired a bunch of smoke detectors. I think there are 8 smoke detectors and a carbon monoxide detector. And every single one of them takes a 9v battery. Our house is annoying to be in right now because 3 of them need their batteries changed. And they remind you… chirp.

An annoying warning sign. Think about this. The chirp that is annoying me is annoying me by design. The batteries are low on those 3  smoke detectors to warn me that if I don’t change the batteries soon they will go back to the silent way there were before with one important difference: They would be dead. They won’t protect my family.

What are the chirps in your life? What are the things in your life that give you constant reminders that you learn to ignore?
