The Fokken Twins: A Saturday Night Live Skit in Real Life

The Fokken Twins of Amsterdam
An interview with the Fokken twins, the oldest prostitutes in Amsterdam, goes horribly wrong in the most awesome way.

[If you can’t play the audio, here’s the source article]

I heard this the other night on NPR, driving back to my hotel from a speaking gig, and I had to pull over because I was laughing so hard. It was like a Saturday Night Live skit… except in real life and broadcast all over the United States and Canada.

This interview started off a bit odd with an obvious language barrier and talking to two women in their 70’s who might not hear very well. It went completely off the rails from there, ending in the most beautifully charming manner.

The Fokken sisters of Amsterdam. Gilda Radner or Tina Fay would be proud to use those names as characters. It’d make NBC censors squirm.

You can imagine the two very serious Canadian broadcasters conducting the interview as having no idea what to do our how to keep it on topic. The sisters inability to answer the questions is just amazing.

And what happens as they try to wrap up the interview is just amazing.

Thank you, CBC. Thank you.
