Aztec Frustrations

Driving back from Las Vegas a couple weeks ago– the Aztecs were 6-0, ranked 18th in the nation, and favored to win all their remaining games.

The bandwagon effect was in full swing.

49,000 fans filled the artist formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium (Now SDCCU Stadium) the next Saturday. And Boise State blew them out.

A bad loss. It happens.

Time for a reboot!

The Aztecs get the kickoff and drive the ball down Fresno’s throat. 16 plays, 83 yards… then a fumble. 7 minutes of the first quarter gone, we’re back in control… but get no points. Seemingly 15 seconds later Fresno State throws a bomb to a wide open receiver who falls down at the 1 yard line.

Next thing you know… we lost 27-3 to a pretty crappy Fresno State team.

Two weeks ago, driving back from Vegas, I’m thinking we might go to the Fiesta Bowl.

And now? Idaho Potato Bowl or bust!

That’s sports.

What happened? My theory is that they are just tired. We started the season very thin and inexperienced at key positions. Those first 6 wins didn’t come without a cost. The starters are tired. The backups aren’t ready. And after Fall camp and 8 consecutive games I think mental fatigue has set in. This is a team that really needs a bye week but still has a few more weeks to go until they can get some rest.

I still think we can win out and play in a good bowl. If things happen just right we could maybe, just maybe, squeak into the Mountain West Championship game again.

But for now. Let’s beat Hawaii.
