When things aren’t going great… it’s easy to turn into a pessimist. Even as "the leader" at Light Force it’s sometimes easy to join the "this isn’t going well" bandwagon. In fact, one conviction I had tonight is that I need to be more encouraging to the students who are there instead of worrying about ones who aren’t coming. I have a natural tendency to be sarcastic, cutting, and overly discouraging… I need to work on that. I’m really quite optimistic about how things are going… I am just failing to ooze that out of my mouth.
I remember hearing a phrase that went something like this, "When you don’t have a clearly defined ‘win’ in an organization, the default is always to count bodies."
That’s never been more true for me than in the last 3-4 weeks of Light
Force. I’m really struggling to not get caught up in counting bodies.
Focus… the win is defined and it’s not numbers!
The goal right now is to firmly establish healthy small groups. For us, that’s measurable by asking my small groups leaders… "Did your small groups have meaningful conversation?"
Overwhelmingly… we are winning if that is the measurable! I couldn’t
be more excited about how small groups are going in the youth group.
Now… would it be better with more people? Uh, yeah! But we really are accomplishing our main goal for 2006-2007 even if it hasn’t yet resulted in endless people coming.
Now… about those people coming. Yeah, we’re cooking up some events
with that end mind. One will be in just 2 weeks we’ll have something
called "Sprinter." It’s an all night party with lots of stuff that has people fired up. Smell the hype.
