Another Rant on Christians and Guns

Note: Sometimes I feel like I shouting into the wind. No one seems to care. But it breaks my heart to hear the response of so-called Christian leaders to mass shootings be the idea that they should arm themselves. Here’s what I posted on Twitter, added here for saving.

Church leaders… guns in church are a no-no.

Help me understand a theology which believes, quite literally, that the Holy Spirit is our protector and shield, that the Son of God stands before the Father as our representative… and yet you are afraid of someone coming into your church and shooting you? Where’s the faith?

Help me understand how you interpret Romans 12:17-19 and come to the conclusion that violence is the answer? Help me understand how you can read Matthew 5:38-39 and come to the conclusion you need a gun for self-protection.

At the critical point, when soldiers came for Jesus, Simon Peter drew his sword and cut off a man’s ear to defend Jesus. It’s the difference between Jesus of Nazareth and Luke Skywalker of Tatooine. Jesus told Simon Peter not to fight. See John 18:11

Simply put, if Christian had armed themselves, Rome wouldn’t have allowed us to exist. The whole point of the book of Acts is that Christianity is an insurrection of the heart– we are not a people of violence, we are a people of love. Your guns are your idol fool!

People say, “So what if a man comes into our church with a gun?” Yes… “So what” is right! Is not our faith, hope, and future in Jesus alone– He is our protector and shield. He is the author and finisher of life. The idea of Christian leaders arming themselves is a perversion.

Finally– and this is why I’m so sick of this conversation– so many of these gun lovers are, at their core, cowards. Have you ever had a gun pointed at you? Have you ever had your life threatened? I have. And you know what? It clears up your faith real quick.
