  • David Crowder’s New Toy

This has been making it’s way around the blogosphere. I’m looking forward to seeing this addition to the keytar Mr. Crowder is infamous for. Ladies and gentleman it is true. DCB is hooked on Guitar Hero.

  • Vacation Reads

I am not a prolific reader. In fact, I almost never finish a book. Furthermore I tend to read 4-5 books at a time. So here are the books I pounded out while on vacation last week.

    Cash
    The Man Called Cash
    by Steve Turner
I can’t lie. I wanted to know what all the hype was about. Certainly, Johnny Cash is a known name to me. But I never really knew his story. Now I can see why so many people are fascinated by this man. The thing I found interesting about Cash was just how authentic he was. He sinned, knew he was a sinner, battled sin, wrote about sin, and just kept on trying to do life "right" and always managed to stumble into wrong. This was a book that kind of cleared the air about a lot of things and a good way to start off my trip.

    Thedip
    The Dip by Seth Godin
I don’t want to say too much about this little book. (Other than go buy a copy and read it.) Starting in November I’m going to be hosting a series of guest bloggers who reflect on the principles of this book. Bob (my friend, pastor, and boss) kind of turned his head funny when I told him I was reading a book about knowing when to quit… stay tuned to see how this twists and turns.

    Raisingcorn
Raising Less Corn, More Hell by George Pyle
Not sure why I picked this one up. It was very interesting to say the least. Half propaganda and half a reality check for a consumer. I was hoping to kind of look at this as a metaphor for small internet businesses versus the big dogs of internet media. But it didn’t really come through clearly. But now I know how the farming business works.

    Adams
    John Adams: Party of One
    by James Grant
As a lover of all things biographical I knew I would dig this one. It’s half academic look at the life of a founding father and half whimsical look at his personal life. The main problem with this book is that it’s kind of a bruiser at about 500 pages. Since it’s not a page turner it is going to land on my night stand for a few more weeks.

  • Home_ish

With over 6000 miles in air, boat, ferry, shuttle, bummed rides, and rental car travel we are finally back in Michigan.

I’m already dreaming of our next great (family) vacation. I’m trying to talk kristen into going to Oslo and Helsinki.

sound like fun? it does to me!

  • At the gate with coach dungy

So kristen and I are sitting and waiting for our flight back to flint. I’m doing normal stuff like charging my phone and we had a bite to eat.

I am sitting here watching the game (NO vs SEA.. at a stadium we just drove by this morning) when I realiE that the family watching the game near me is tony dungy, head coach of the indianapolis colts. (they had the week off)

so, its not a huge deal. I respect coach as a strong man of faith… a guy who pulls no punches in his claims for Christ.

I think its pretty cool. and I think it is cool that folks are giving his family some space as they travel.

  • Originality and blogs

I’m in the process of catching up on 7 days worth of google reader stuff.

I think the thing that is so surprising to me is how much hat tipping there is. someone will post something they thought of or observed… and then that thought will make the rounds.

I don’t know if it is good or bad. I just know that origionality is lacking on a lot of blogs. I can see why some peolple stop readingv blogs that just regurgitate the post of the day. sooner or later people will find where your thoughts come from and just cut the middle man.

  • At zaks

They have burgers n stuff. we are chilling in ballrd. bad place for parking and cool place for art.

  • Sleep

Kristen is chilling and sam owns me.

  • Another meet-up

As we arrived in friday harbor we were joined by brian and johnny from ymx as well brians family, dana, sam, and emma.

  • Day 3 suchia island

Yesterday was a really nice sunny day. I have no idea the name of this island but I like it because it is flat and hiking around was effortless. We tooled around the forest and walked the stone beaches. There isn’t a ton of wildlife here but loads of semi-normal things for the islands like otters, seaguls and bald eagles.

The thing that sticks in my memory about wednesday is how the pace was just right for me. I’m kind of finding my space and getting into some nice conversations. It is really nice to be around other folks who get the pressures of church leadership as well as understand the dynamic of ymx.

One thing I haven’t mentioned about the catalyst yet is the great food. Shannon is wearing a few hats this week since the regular crew is off. She is holding down the food part extremey well. We are getting treated to gorgious meals on a regular basis… Or more than regular basis.

Its hard to imagine that in only a couple more days it will be over. As soon as you fall into the rythym of vacation it seems to be over. I am trying hard not to think of the things I need to do when I get back. Yikes… Better if I don’t do that.

Kristen has gotten a chance to check on the kids the last couple days. They seem to be doing quite we’ll without us but we really wish they could have come. A couple more years and that will be much more possible. Part of me just gets sad when we see something cool because in my head I can hear what paul or megan would say if they saw or did what we are doing.

    Next time.
