How much sound?

DecibelmeterI’ve been wanting to do this for the past several months, so I finally headed over to the local Radio Shack and picked up this wonder.

Now I just have to do a little research about "condusive decibel levels for modern worship." The aim here is that our sound guys would use the meter to balance the sound on Sunday morning. This will help us get away from people competing against one another and instead mixing the house sound to a specific number.

    I think we settled on an immediate standard. We’ll be aiming to keep it in 70-80 db during worship times, with peaks at 85 just fine.

    This has taught me a lot as the sound system is set to max out at 105 db, well below the potential damage level of 140 db and safely away from most people’s uncomfort level of 110 db.

    Man, at “full blast” 105 is extremely loud on our system.
