The political agenda slap in the face

So the elections are over, the Democrats have the House and Senate… and American conservatives were lulled to sleep. We were fools to believe that the conservatives would win an election based purely on war. Clearly, the American people have voted on the war and they said ."no more." It’s not that this has been a particularly bloody conflict in contrast to others… it’s that the media has constantly shown us the negative as opposed to the strides being taken to stabilize Iraq.

The conservatives fought on the wrong issue and lost.

What’s next for the Congress? Based on the Zogby Interactive poll I just took, (I’ve participated in their polls for about 6 months) the issues about to be brought up in January have nothing to do with the war in Iraq.

Allowing the Congress to go fully democrat may increase the likelihood of a Republican president in 2008, but it’s clear that the same 3 issues that Democrats care about will be front and center between now and then. Based on the poll I just took, I can clearly say gay marriage, increased abortion rights, and more new taxes are on the liberal agenda for 2007.

See, Americans got confused on the issues last Tuesday. The liberals used the media to let you think the election was about the war in Iraq when in fact it was about domestic issues. Pretty cute, eh?

My guess would be that in the early part of 2007 they are going to go for broke and toss some of these issues  into the back end of war bills. So Americans will be satisfied that their votes brought an end to problems in Iraq… and the issues we care about will be increasingly marginalized.

First thing on their agenda seems to be making it illegal to speak against homosexuality. Calling homosexuality "wrong" will likely be considered hate speech very soon. They will first make it illegal to speak against what God calls a sin… and then conservatives won’t be able to speak against homosexuality while liberals legalize domestic partnerships on the federal level.

I hate "fear speech." It’s one of the things I like least about politics. It is completely ineffective. So I just want to end my journal today with a note to myself after taking this poll. This isn’t "fear speech" so much as it is the reality we’ve just voted in. The Zogby poll wasn’t asking "do you think these issues are important?" They were gaging how much of it we would tolerate on day one. So if that picture at the top makes you queasy… just wait until next summer.

Adam, hon, sorry to say it but you have been brainwashed.

The conservatives would LOVE for you to believe that gay rights & abortion are the issues, so they can scare those of you who agree with their views into not voting Democrat.

The real issues, which affect the voters, unlike the things you listed, are the war and the economy. The Republicans have screwed it up. Way past time for someone else to have a shot at fixing it before this country goes any further down the drain.

And it’s also a fallacy that the Democrats want more government and more taxes. It’s the *Republicans* who want to take away our freedoms. It’s the *Republicans* who have turned this country into a place where you have to speak in their politically correct viewpoint way or you’re “unpatriotic.”

    sorry.

Oh yeah – and that picture at the top. I think it’s awesome. Just like interracial couples were awesome back in the 60s when these same tired arguments were going on. Bigotry is NOT Christian.

Cindy, two things. (Of course, thanks for commenting… that’s the real “first thing)

    1. The agenda you mentioned simply does not line up with the poll I took today. The first section asked me how I voted and what were the issues that guided my vote. The last half had only to do with social issues and had nothing to do with the war at all.

    2. The fear language you’ve chosen is unjust for the topic. Tossing a word like “bigotry” is an escalation and use of a power word in an incorrect place… because any counter someone offers you can just say, “Well, you are bigoted.” Unlike racism, although pervasive in ancient times, is explicitly against Jesus’ teaching in the new testament. Homosexuality was an issue in the 1st century and the New Testament clearly teaches/affirms that it’s wrong. (See Romans 1 as an example) The simple fact is that ANY sex…homosexual, bisexual, asexual, heterosexual… outside of a marriage (God’s intention/design is clearly that marriage is between a man and woman) is outside of what he wants.

Your statement “Bigotry is NOT Christian” (in concert with everything else you’ve said) seems to stipulate that all things are permissible in the world and fall under a general “love your neighbors” “God is love” approach. Unfortunately, hermeneutically, that’s re-writing the Bible to say what culture wants to hear. In the whole of the Bible, no where does it say that God’s love for humanity supersedes His other attributes. (Justice, benevolence, omnipotence, holiness, etc)

By the way. I don’t belong to a political party. I would label myself as conservative but not republican. This journal entry was about the Zogby poll and what I foresaw the Democrats agenda now that they’ve won all the legislative powers. When you said, “The conservatives would LOVE for you to believe that gay rights & abortion are the issues, so they can scare those of you who agree with their views into not voting Democrat” you failed to see that the point of the entry was that the pollster formulated those questions… not a political party.

I suppose we will have to agree to disagree on this issue, because there is a fundamental chasm between two viewpoints…..you are basing your views of what God thinks of homosexuality on a belief that homosexuality is a chosen behavior, while I believe that it is something that a person intrinsically is or is not, just like gender or race.

Personally, I kinda wish your pollsters were correct, even though I don’t think they are. Even straight girls like me have gay friends, and we hate seeing them discriminated against…just like I hated seeing my black friends discriminated against as a child.
