So the elections are over, the Democrats have the House and Senate… and American conservatives were lulled to sleep. We were fools to believe that the conservatives would win an election based purely on war. Clearly, the American people have voted on the war and they said ."no more." It’s not that this has been a particularly bloody conflict in contrast to others… it’s that the media has constantly shown us the negative as opposed to the strides being taken to stabilize Iraq.
The conservatives fought on the wrong issue and lost.
What’s next for the Congress? Based on the Zogby Interactive poll I just took, (I’ve participated in their polls for about 6 months) the issues about to be brought up in January have nothing to do with the war in Iraq.
Allowing the Congress to go fully democrat may increase the likelihood of a Republican president in 2008, but it’s clear that the same 3 issues that Democrats care about will be front and center between now and then. Based on the poll I just took, I can clearly say gay marriage, increased abortion rights, and more new taxes are on the liberal agenda for 2007.
See, Americans got confused on the issues last Tuesday. The liberals used the media to let you think the election was about the war in Iraq when in fact it was about domestic issues. Pretty cute, eh?
My guess would be that in the early part of 2007 they are going to go for broke and toss some of these issues into the back end of war bills. So Americans will be satisfied that their votes brought an end to problems in Iraq… and the issues we care about will be increasingly marginalized.
First thing on their agenda seems to be making it illegal to speak against homosexuality. Calling homosexuality "wrong" will likely be considered hate speech very soon. They will first make it illegal to speak against what God calls a sin… and then conservatives won’t be able to speak against homosexuality while liberals legalize domestic partnerships on the federal level.
I hate "fear speech." It’s one of the things I like least about politics. It is completely ineffective. So I just want to end my journal today with a note to myself after taking this poll. This isn’t "fear speech" so much as it is the reality we’ve just voted in. The Zogby poll wasn’t asking "do you think these issues are important?" They were gaging how much of it we would tolerate on day one. So if that picture at the top makes you queasy… just wait until next summer.
