Yes, we are having church on Sunday

Unless something dramatically changes, (such as there is a state of emergency) we are having church tomorrow. And not to sound trite, but unless you have a very good reason, we expect to see everyone.

For those Michiganers who let a little snow scare you into the house instead of gathering for church… why not see just how easy you have it right now and spend some time at Voice of the Martyrs?

Here’s a story from Iraq that should put the shovel in your hand:

Living in the atmosphere of Iraq, those who are controlled by the spirit of fear forced many churches to close their doors and told their members, ‘We will call you when the circumstances get better.’ When churches started to close their doors, people immigrated to Northern Iraq and some to Syria and Jordan. Many Christians did not find an open church to go to.

This isn’t meant as a guilt trip. This is a friendly reminder that thousands of men and women have given their lives for our freedom to meet and worship. Snow schmow. In the words of Todd Porter, suck it up cream puff.

By the way, we’ve got a great service planned.

shoveling my driveway is not going to accomplish anything since my sub division won’t end up plowed for at least 3-5 days.

that does not mean i am a wimp.
it means that i have a small car that will get stuck.

I’ve got 4 inches of snow. Sure I wouldn’t go to the park for a picnic this morning but that’s not stopping church.

If it were 2 feet I’d reconsider. But last time I checked Michigan was surrounded by lakes and Canada. 4 inches isn’t going to stop me Autumn. If it was the difference between keeping your job and losing your job you’d be there. Gut check time.

Just talked to Bob. All is going forward as planned.

Update: Drove in about 7. Parking lot is cleared. Everything shoveled and ready to roll. It’s really not that bad once you get onto the main roads. Even my street was fine… just not plowed.

I agree with you in the most part. Bill, Autumn and myself will make it to church. I can think of only one time in 30 plus years that the snow kept us from making it to church. The only part I disagree with you, is our elderly church members. Some of them have problems walking when its dry out. I think if it’s not safe for them (and no one can pick them up), it’s best for them to stay home.

On the way to church if we see anyone stuck, we’ll tell them to call your cell number.

I’m looking forward to today’s service. See you soon.

Adam, my church cancelled service. Of course, my SP made that call while he is in Hawaii visiting his dad. LOL

I honestly do not know why they cancelled, it wasn’t that bad. But, oh well, I will take the day to spend with the kids and snow blowing my neighbors driveways, I did 3 already, not counting mine.

I do remember the firs Sunday of 1999 that we had to cancel church, but there was about 2 feet of snow that fell overnight. Even the malls were saying on Saturday that they would be closed. However, the SP at the church I was attending at the time said that he wasn’t a wimp and would not close, so I told him I would show up early that morning to help shovel out. So Sunday morning I get to the church building about 5a and no one is there. So I climb over the snow banks and open the door to go inside, they had just given me a key to the building 2 days earlier, and I call the SP’s house to find out why no one was there. His wife tells me that she can’t believe that Tim, the maintenance guy, wasn’t there and to check and make sure. I tell her that I am sure. So she harasses me for a little bit more and then finally says, “didn’t anyone call you?” “Ummm, No”, I say. “Oh well, someone was supposed to call and tell you that church is indeed cancelled.”

So I got back in my jeep drove home and then later in the day went and rescued the SP, who got his van stuck, so we could go shovel out the church building.

I didn’t say that I was going to stay home from church or that staying home is worth losing your job over.

What I’m saying is that not everybody has it as easy as you. Some people, most people actually, live in sub divisions that don’t get plowed, or on back roads which don’t get plowed.

While a lot of people do use the snow as an excuse…it’s not quite as easy to get out & to church or where ever as you make it out to be.

Autumn, it’s as easy as you make it. A couple of thoughts… (BTW, I know you guys can take a good ribbing!)

    1. The news hounds need to be held more accountable. Telling people to not leave their houses with 4-5 inches of snow negatively impacts the entire economy.
    2. The more people that drive in the snow the better. There are times when it’s not safe to do that… but that’s when the declare a state of emergency. Otherwise, the more people on the roads means that the roads get cleared sooner.
    3. Homeowners should call to complain if their streets aren’t cleared quickly. If they don’t come up with a workable plan, don’t vote for them.

Don’t even get me started on the dirt roads. Every road in Michigan should be paved. It doesn’t increase traffic and it doesn’t make you less rural. Who will pay? Homeowners. It’ll get offset by homeowners ability to make more money and be safer by living in places that are safe and accessible to commerce. No one can convince me that a road is safer as unpaved than as paved. Just as no one can convince me that a road is more historically accurate as a dirt road. If that’s the case they need to plank the roads and ban people from driving cars on them.

Barb, you’ve got a good point about the elderly. I’m not talking about them. They should all move to Florida for the winter!

I could have made it to church today, even with 8 inches of new snow by the time we had to leave… BUT, my church canceled services 14 hours before the snow started and 24 hours before the late service.

This is the northeast! We get winter weather! Yes, I’m still frustrated about that. 😀

Don’t even get me started with the news hounds. If we listened to them, we wouldn’t have been at church he last three weeks. We live in Michigan for crying out loud! The way they talk we need to hoard food and water for the winter and not leave the house until spring. It cracks me up when they have the news crews out in all the towns to show us the snow that we shouldn’t be traveling in. How did they get to the 40 different towns they are in? O.K., I promise I’m done ranting on this subject. At least until the next snow storm.

Well, Adam, at least you are getting the snow day you wanted from school tomorrow! 🙂

Argh I totally agree that the weather people are totally dumb and people shouldn’t listen to them.
And there is nothing wrong with dirt roads. It is dumb that they won’t pave campground because it is a ‘natural beauty road’.
Although I must say, my road shouldn’t be dirt…thats’ just dumb.

And they called school at like 7pm, which was kinda lame. Campground is even paved! When I came home from the movies, the roads were fine for busses to go on, but whatev…snow days are cool.

I meant campground is plowed…not paved.

  15. adam mclane Avatar

I gotcha. You said Campground is paved and that would be a miracle!

Calling school… I wonder if there is discussion about just starting break early. Though, if I were a HS student, I’d be sweating bullets as they aren’t getting their classroom hours in. Remember… RHS is counting hours now and not school days. With all the early dismissals they might lose a break or have to stay later into June to make this stuff up.

Oh that would make me happy if they had to go over in June 🙂
