  • Loyalty Tested

Tonight at Light Force we’re exploring the idea of true loyalty and the high cost of disloyalty. Here’s a quote from Donald Trump’s blog that I’ll be using in my introduction.

On a recent episode of The Apprentice, some people were
surprised that I didn’t fire Rebecca after a rather contentious meeting
in the boardroom. Rebecca had broken her ankle the week before and set
out to prove, despite her physical setback, that she was still capable
of leading her team. She volunteered to be project manager, but
unfortunately for her, the women’s team failed.

    There was a lot
of finger pointing for the loss, and most of those fingers were aimed
in Toral’s direction. But instead of immediately picking Toral to
return with her to the boardroom, Rebecca opted to let her return to
the suite. Apparently, Toral had helped Rebecca with her ankle, and
Rebecca held Toral in high esteem for her educational background (my
alma mater, Wharton) and for her business background.

    Even when I
personally suggested that Rebecca reconsider, she remained steadfast in
her decision. It was either a really stupid move or a really smart one.
Fortunately, for Rebecca, there are few qualities I value more than
    loyalty.

When employees and employers, even coworkers, have a
commitment to one another, everyone benefits. I have people who have
been in business with me for decades. I reward their loyalty to the
organization and to me. I know that they’ll always be dedicated to what
we’re trying to accomplish. The reason I have so many loyal people in
the Trump Organization is that the loyalty is reciprocated. A lot of
companies feel that dedication is a one-way street, but I think that’s
an easy way to lose good, talented people.

    In Rebecca’s case, I
was impressed by her steadfastness. (I still think she made a stupid
decision, and I fired Toral the following week.) Nevertheless, I was
    moved by her dedication.

I’m not saying that "The Donald" is nearly the leader that Jesus was and is… but it needs to be very clear from anyone claiming to be a leader that they demand and respect loyalty.

That said, the true test of loyalty isn’t in proclaiming it… it’s in living it out when that loyalty is tested. When the one you are being loyal to isn’t living up to expectations, are you still loyal?

I’m in the process of re-evaluating myself, my ministry, my direction (heck, I do this every day don’t I?) and I know I clearly reward those who are loyal… but I wonder if I’m really fostering loyalty? Am I worth someone being loyal to?

  • Audio of last week’s message

Since there was such a clamoring of people wanting to hear it, here’s a link to the mp3 of Sunday’s message. [mp3j track="Listen now@http://fbcromeo.org./audio/service_060514.mp3" volslider="y" style="outline"]

  • It’s Sunday morning and I’m…

    Ready.

Suprised? I am. It’s 9:15 and I don’t have much to do but… just relax and keep mentally preparing for today’s message "How do you know you can trust us?" (Philipians 3:12-21)

  • the CORE detroit

I’m here in the lobby of Calvary Baptist Church in Canton, MI. Today I’ll be attending the CORE (a youth ministry training day) with some of my volunteers and one student.

Well, it’s super cool that they have wireless here at the church… but it’s a bit annoying that their filter won’t even let me check my fantasy baseball score. Too weird.

  • Light Force Recap

Lightforcelogo1_1Thankfully I’ve done this long enough to know that being in youth group in May tends to be weird. The students are what we call "squirrly" and I’m also at a point in our series where I want to both finish strong and just finish it.

Last night when I was talking about Noah I knew I was in trouble when I said the word "sex." It wasn’t an embarassment thing for them, it just got their minds wandering. A giggle here and a giggle there. Some weird looks, some side conversations. (Especially when you talk about humans having sex with non-humans… boy that set them off!)

I’ve learned the hard way not to take questions. About 4 years ago I was talking in our middle school group from Genesis when a hand went up. A very innocent and serious 12 year old girl asked "Pastor Adam, what does it mean to be circumsised?" I fumbled around a little bit about cutting foreskin… then I said, the best thing to do is read Genesis 17 and if she still didn’t get it, to ask her dad.

I’m not exempt from stupid questions that disrupt things. As a junior at Moody I raised my hand and asked in a Genesis class as we studied Genesis 17, "So who do you think went first? Or did God’s commandment come with some instructions? I mean, how did Abraham know how to do that?"

  • Watch out for this mom

ExlaxPut this under "things Adam never thought would be against the law."

    A North New Portland woman

accused of helping her daughter make

cookies laced with the laxative Ex-Lax

appeared before a judge Monday and pleaded

innocent to a single charge of misdemeanor

    assault. Read the story now

According to the article, the lady and her daughter made the cookies to get back at the teacher for a low grade.

Thanks to marko for this story

  • It’s LOUD in here

    Ears
All I can think of right now is how loud it is in the offices. The construction crew is busy removing the old facade of the building for the new brick/EFIS front. For the last week or so their work has concentrated on the far end of the building and not been disruptive… but now they are in the office wing. ZOINK!

  • Time to spend some time updating…

Romeo_logo_front_1I’ve finally got a day when I can spend some time working on the church website. One thing I want to do right away is get the same mp3 capabilities on the church site that we have on YMX. So if you get a minute, check it out and let me know what you think.

  • The Contender

Boxing_ring_titleTonight I’m really excited about LF. Not only is it a perfect night to play games outside and play with diet coke and mentos and wear shorts and all that "nice night goofiness" that we’re sure to experience.

But I’m also excited to continue on our teaching series. Tonight we’ll be watching the battle that Jesus introduces to us in Luke 20. His enemies brought the fight and for our sake he embraces it.

  • Static Age doesn’t open at 6

StaticageOur intention was pretty simple. We wanted to take the Zero Hour Bible study back to it’s roots. In the fall of 2004 we started meeting at Sweetie’s Cafe at 6:15 AM. Well, shortly after our study ended for the school year, the place closed.

Flash forward to this winter when Static Age opened in the same location. It’s taken us a bit of time but we finally decided to move the thing from my house (which is pretty sweet since I don’t have to travel) back to Static Age.

Well, we all showed up this morning. The sign on the window says it opens at 6:00 AM, but it doesn’t. So we basically hung out and waited around until 6:45 before relenting and going over to Speedway. I’ll have to ask the people who run it what happened when I go there tomorrow.
