  • From the wheelhouse

We are just hanging out in the wheelhouse.

  • On the ferry

We grossly underestimated how far our hotel was from ferry dock. we thought it was 3 miles or so and it ended up being 6+. the bad news was that kristen and I had decided to walk it… and we only had an hour.

we were so going to miss the ferry… putting the whole trip in peril. that’s right I said peril. like if we missed the ferry we were screwed.

just when I was starting to deal with the reality that we were going to miss the ferry… right when we trotted past a sign that sais… ferry 2.9 miles with 20 minutes to go… right then a car pulled over.

I said to kristen, is this lady about to save our lives? (ok, a tad melodramatic) but she totally saved the day. thank you nancy and her nasty smelling dog socks.

so now we are on the boat. a couple hours and we will be on the boat.

  • Anacortes

We have made it to our day 1 destination of anacortes washington. its pushing midnight and we have to be up pretty early in the morning to catch our ferry to friday harbor.

    a couple of quick observations.

first, dean force defines hospitality. he picked us up from the airport and drove us up here. that was super cool on a lot of levels. more than anything it was awesome to talk about his passion… messianic judaism.

second, its cold! kristen and I just went for a quick walk and it has to be in the mid 40s.

  • We are here in atlanta

Nothing really to share. boring flight and a micro-layover. our flight to seattle leaves in about 1 hour.

  • The emergent blessings of not making plans

Kristen and I are infamous "non-planners" when it comes to vacation time. Rather, we aren’t the type to make elaborate plans months in advance of a trip. And to be honest this is mostly my trait and Kristen has just learned to go along with it.

As a result, we are always amazed at how God (and His people) just seems to take care of us. We never presume this is going to happen, I just try hard to not sweat the details of a trip to leave room for God-sized stuff to happen.

That seems to be happening with our upcoming trip next week. We made the "big plan" for the trip 6 months ago or so. We knew where we were going (on a cruise) so we knew when it left and when we’d return. We also had some big black hole unknowns that we chose to not try to work out from here. We always feel as though we’re better off making plans locally for the details than we are trying to figure it out from thousands of miles away. So the details of where we would stay and what we would do before and after the cruise were/are still up in the air.

Yet bit by bit, those details are getting worked out in far cooler ways than we previously imagined. I can’t wait to share those details later.  And I’m not the only one stoked about this trip. I got this note from the captain of our boat last night:

I’m so looking forward to our trip!! Exactly 7 days from now we’ll be cruising up the westside of San Juan
Island, perhaps among a group of Orcas, on the way to our first nights
    anchorage. Count it down!!

  • One week until vacation

In just a week Kristen and I are off on our second big vacation of the year. This is a great vacation year for us! We’re headed off to a cruise in the San Juan Islands on the Pacific Catalyst with Bill and Mama Shan. We’re spending serious quality time with some friends from YMX.

Since no one I know really gets why we are so excited about this I thought I’d post a video.

  • Forbidden Blizzard

I don’t know if I’ve properly talked about my addiction to Mynameisbill.com. But it’s fascinating to see this filmmaker make his way around the globe and video blog his experiences. Today’s installment is unreal. To think of being able to get Starbucks and even DQ in the once forbidden city.

  • A weekend at camp!

    Globe_rubiks_cube
This weekend I am off to upstate New York to help out at a great retreat. I’ve never been to this part of the world, so I am pretty excited to see what "the camp capital of the world" is really all about.

I also don’t get to go to a lot of retreats… so this is going to be fun. (Our group kind of lost interest.) I’m looking forward to encouraging the students of the Albany Diocese, making new friends, and connecting face to face with Patti’s family.

As I’ve been reminded. It’s bad of me to travel on my wife’s birthday. Naughty, naughty boy. But it’s all for a good cause!

Here’s a blog post from my buddy Jason about speaking at this event last year.

I look forward to being back in Romeo Sunday night. Lord willing next week will be back to 100% normal.

  • My Name is Bill

I have a new web addiction. It’s called, mynameisbill.com. Bill describes himself as an "Interactive World Traveler." Basically, he blogs and posts videos about his travel and responds to users suggestions and comments. Once at a location, he does a little video blog and links to the unique things he’s discovered.

    It’s worth checking out. www.mynameisbill.com.

  • 10 day post

    10 day post

I’m not even going to try to recap the last 10 days of “blog silence.” I will say that it was quite nice to not have a computer for the whole of my vacation. Even though I could have easily taken it I chose not too and it was a pleasant break for that reason.

Let’s see… how do I recap 10 days of vacation with Kristen in a gorgeous country?
Well… take a look at our pictures in the “Northern Ireland 2007” photos to the right and below is my daily log as I recall it.
