No More Wimpy Church

Alright, this is pretty funny and cool. Mark Driscoll is the teaching pastor at Mars Hill Church in Seattle, WA and the founder of Acts 29 church plant movement. What’s interesting to me is that he’s not alone in this sentiment. There are a lot of people asking "the church" to get more masculine. I went to a session at NYWC in Cincinnati last fall essentially saying the same thing about youth ministry… How do you think you’re going to attract young men? By doing stuff that would get them labeled as gay? I don’t think so.

question: For those who go to church… do you agree with Mark’s sentiment that we tend to make church for chicks? If so, what can we do to change that? If you don’t think so, how come?

I agree. We need a stainless steel podium and more pyrotechnics in the service. Night services should have a score update bar at the bottom of the Power Point Screen during the message. Should Sheffield hit a home run, the church erupts “SCOOORE!!!” and after everyone knuckle-taps and high-fives, they get back to the text. Flowers all over everything becomes a thing of the past and are replaced by flat-screen televisions (including over the urnals) and lots and lots of wires.

i do agree. i think you and i kind of talked about this the other day at bfast. our faith has become an emotional thing. it’s all about how we feel about God and love and mushy “how do you feel?” kind of stuff. while i don’t think all of that is bad, i know that kind of stuff is not necessarily appealing to men esp in the generation where men “can’t” cry or show their emotions. they have to be tough and strong and w.e. and christianity is a lot more than how we feel about things. it also needs to be a (crap im having a brain fart on what the techincal word is) critically thought through faith where we dig deeper for knowledge not emotions.

so yes. the church today has become more emotional and feminine than i would say back in biblical times. how to fix it? good question…
