  • Political Promises

Obama vs HillaryThe last weekend prior to the Indiana and North Carolina primaries have been particularly ridiculous. It seems that the new strategy of both the Clinton and Obama campaign has been to out-promise one another.

It reminds me of 5th grade as people ran for student council. “If elected, I will give new uniforms to the basketball team and cheerleaders.” [insert applause] Of course, when that girl got elected no one got new uniforms. It turns out the student body president doesn’t get to decide stuff like that.

It also reminds me of the countless stories I’ve heard from people joining the military. They will promise you whatever you want to hear so that you will sign on the dotted line. Of course, a recruiter has zero say in what you actually do once in the military. But their only job is to tell you what you want to hear so that you join.

It’s the same with these political candidates.  They don’t care what they promise, they only care that you punch their name at the election. It’s impossible for them to say things like “I’d eliminate the gas tax.” or “I’d pull soldiers out of Iraq the day I get elected.” or “I’ll tax you less while giving you more.” One candidate tries to look presidential in front of flags while another drinks whiskey and pretends to like country music. It’s all just marketing. Of course, the thing is that the President of the United States can’t just pull soldiers out of Iraq or cancel a gas tax or cut taxes while increasing benefits. The President is not a supreme ruler as there are two other equal levels of government. Do you really think that Congress would allow the President to abandon a mission in Iraq? Do you really thing the Supreme Court would consider it lawful to force corporations to pay more taxes?

Ultimately, politicians only care about one thing. They care that you will walk into the voter booth and punch their name. They will tell you whatever fantasy you want to hear.

Let’s hear them argue about something important! Which mac-n-cheese is the cheesiest?

  • Trailers That are Destroying America

No, this isn’t a post about mobile homes ruining our nation… though that would be a funny post. This is a clip from The Colbert Report about summer movies. It’s Monday and we all need a laugh. Enjoy.

And if this post is not holy enough. Just remember than in real life, Stephen Colbert is a Sunday school teacher.

  • Plus 4 on Twitter

twitLike a lot of people, I’ve gotten used to the quirkiness that is Twitter. (what is twitter?) It’s kind of cool to connect with people in 140 characters or less. Follow me.
One measurement tool that I use when looking at someone who wants me to follow them is their ratio between followers and following. If someone has 500 followers and they are only following 12 people. (+488) That’s interesting to me but tells me they likely have something important to say. Conversely, if someone is following 2500 people and only has 12 followers. (-2488) I don’t want to follow that person.

Personally, I like it when a persons Twitter numbers are reasonably the same. Right now I have 96 followers and I’m following 92 people. That puts me at +4.

As Twitter finally takes off into the common usage of bloggers and general internet users… it’ll be interesting to see how this ratio effects things.

Ultimately, how do I decide whether or not to follow someone who is following me?  I’ve got some standards. The ratio is very important. Also, when I look at a profile I want to see a link and a bio.
If your bio says you work at a church or do student ministry… I’m going to follow you automatically. If you do something else and I’m interested in that or know you personally, I’ll follow you. Other than that I’m not interested.

  • Saturday Tunes

Saturday TunesIt’s Saturday in all of its awesomeness. This morning Kristen is headed to some chick conference to learn about God and get pampered… because both are good things. That leaves daddy in charge until 3 and a full palate of kid goodness to enjoy. So, as I’m driving around to soccer games, McDonald’s, Dairy Queen, and any other junk food they demand here are the next 10 tunes piping through our minds. As always, these are random-tastic and ratings are included.

  • Catching up on The Office

The OfficeRecently I had the time to sit down and watch all of the episodes of The Office, Season 1. It’s a cool show but not the best show on TV. People talk about it as if it were as good as Cheers or The Cosby Show or other classic NBC hit sitcoms. It isn’t any of those things. While I will continue to catch up, it’s not that great.

Perhaps I’m ruined because I saw the British version of this show first? About two years ago I checked out the original The Office season one from the Romeo Library and laughed my butt off.  In U.S. terms it would be rated R… so if you check it out be warned. And as I watched the U.S. version is like the quirky, not-so-funny and squeaky clean cousin to the real thing.

Steve Carrel is funny. He’s very high on my list of comedians… but not nearly as funny as Ricky Gervais

  • Sportsmanship on Display

sportsmanship at central washington universityOn April 26th, Central Washington faced Western Oregon for an important softball match-up. When Sara Tuchholsky, a player for Western Oregon, settled in for her at bat she would have no idea it would be her last.

With the swing of the bat Sara did something she’d never done before in her softball career. She hit a 3 run home run to put her team in the lead. “Surprised by her accomplishment, Tucholsky missed first base as she ran past it. She turned around to tag the base, but her knee gave out, sending her to the ground with a painful injury. It was later determined to likely be a torn ACL.”

But the story didn’t end there. What happened next has made this a national news story. When Sara simply couldn’t run the bases and her home run at risk of not counting, two players from Central Washington asked the umpires if they could carry Sara around the bases so her home run would count.
“Umpires conversed and decided that yes, it would be allowable. So Holtman and Wallace, locking their hands under Tucholsky, gently lifted and carried her from base to base, allowing her to tap each base with her left foot. The three players exchanged giggles as they made it around the field.”

“We didn’t even know that while we were carrying her around the bases, people in the stands were crying,” Holtman said. “We just thought it was the right thing to do.”

It was the right thing to do. What an awesome example of sportsmanship! I hope this story gets printed out and pinned up by every athletic director in the country.
