The Sea

ten things i have learned about the sea from lorenzo fonda on Vimeo.

I was mesmerized by this short film. Like the filmmaker, there is something about the ocean that speaks deeply to my soul.

If I had unlimited time to travel, explore, and write… traveling by cargo ship would be incredible. Am I the only one who looks at this film and says, 14 days from San Francisco to Xiamen? Yes, please!

Jan and I once took a 17 day cruise across the Atlantic. We didn’t see land for 7 days and sailed through the Bermuda Triangle. One of best experiences. Although, our ship was a bit more classy and had a few more things to do than a cargo ship…

Since I’ve had this newfound fascination with faraway and slow trips… I did a little reading up on this.

It turns out, the cabins are generally pretty nice. They only take 6-12 passengers… so you kind of get to know everyone. Many of them have small pools and decks for hanging out. Cabins are bigger than cruise ships, all have windows, stuff like that. You eat with the ships officers… which from the sounds of it, is good food, especially if you chose a french ship. It seems like it is definitely for the more adventurous traveler who can find their own entertainment. (When you get to port, you’re on your own, no tour busses or stuff like that. You have to figure it out and get back on time!)

Other slow trips I’ve looked at?

I’m intrigued by the slow pace of some of the far out islands of the UK. Renting a house somewhere like Coll seems really fun! http://www.visitcoll.co.uk/

I’d love to spend two weeks or so on a barge in France. http://www.barginginfrance.com/EN/

These are all things under the heading: Forced relaxation.

And they are all things with no internet!

Sad as it may sound, I often need to be forced in order to relax. You’ve stubbled onto something brilliant here, Mr. Mclane…I may be dreaming about a cargo ship tonight.

Adam- This video was fascinating, thanks for sharing. I’ve never had the desire to go on a cruise, I like to move around and take spontaneous sidetrips – probably pretty impossible on a ship unless you’re a really good swimmer. I’ve never been in a passenger cabin on a cargo ship, but I have been in the captain’s quarters – you’re talkin about a penthouse presidential suite at Caeser’s Palace. It was opulent and HUGE.

If anyone is interested in a different kind of cruise in Alaska, an internet friend of mine runs a small ship with week long cruises- http://www.pacificcatalyst.com/index_ns.htm
