No, this isn’t a post about mobile homes ruining our nation… though that would be a funny post. This is a clip from The Colbert Report about summer movies. It’s Monday and we all need a laugh. Enjoy.
And if this post is not holy enough. Just remember than in real life, Stephen Colbert is a Sunday school teacher.
If you’re in youth ministry, you know Marko. He’s the President of Youth Specialties and an all around fun guy. This spring he challenged youth workers to join him in a contest they created called, “Are you a bigger loser than Marko?” It’s a take-off on the hit show… and a bunch of people did it.
Well, last week it was announced that Marko had actually won his own contest. Yesterday, this video appeared on Marko’s blog.
OK, that’s just funny! It seems like what they are really doing is announcing more winners. But I like that they didn’t just say… “Uh, we’re going to give these people prizes.” Instead the produced a very cool video announcing the same thing.
It’s safe to say that I make videos for ministry. On average, I make two. Generally I make the “bumper video” that comes just before the sermon and then there is a wild card project that comes up for one of the other things we are doing at Romeo. I’ve made videos for our kids ministry, student ministry, church services, marriage ministry, websites, on and on.
So how do we do it?
It starts with the end result in mind. We ask the question: “What does this video need to communicate?” before we think of the ideas that go into it.
We brainstorm the concept. Will it be funny? Will it be dramatic? Will it be shocking? Will it be thought provoking?
We decide how much time its worth. Several months ago I spent 5 hours on a video that was less than 1 minute long and we used 1 time. It was awesome… but it wasn’t worth the time. So now we spend time time deciding the importance of the video. I spent 30+ hours on a video a couple months back and it was totally worth it.
We filter ideas based on time… including edit time.
We sketch out the videos time line. This is fluid when we go to actually shooting the video, but at this point it helps to do a sketch to determine stuff for the rest of the steps.
We agree on a time to shoot the video. Getting this scheduled is important so that it doesn’t happen the day before we need it!
I map out what I’ll need for the shoot. Video and sound equipment, people, props, permission, stuff like that.
We shoot the video. Once we get on site or set up… the video tends to change a lot. But agreeing on what to communicate and the sketch of the shoot ahead of time is pretty huge.
I edit the movie. The big decision is… to use iMovie or Adobe Premiere? That depends entirely on the type of video we’re creating. Most bumper videos are simple so I do them in iMovie. If I need a video with effects and layers and a lot of those details really matter… Premiere it is.
I publish the movie. 9 out of 10 times I publish it to YouTube so I can show it to a couple of people before making the final version for use in our ministry.
I premier it. There is nothing quite as exciting as an audience seeing your idea on the big screen for the first time.
For those who do video in their ministry, how do you do it differently?
I’m a big fan of Craig Gross and the ministry of xxxchurch.com. (The #1 porn site for Christians, by the way) Which means I’m not a huge fan of Ron Jeremy. (Old school porn star) One of the craziest things going on today is that xxxchurch.com and Ron Jeremy are traveling the country together to hold, what they call, The Porn Debate on college and university campuses.
This video is self-explanatory. Ron & Craig were in the car together and they were talking about music. Listen in on this discussion between them about Christian music and worship music. Then watch what happens when Craig and Ron talk about going to a Christian concert together.
I missed this, but there is plenty of talk about it today on blogs. During American Idol last night the cast sang Darlene Zschech’s classic modern worship song, Shout to the Lord. (The song has it’s own Wikipedia page, you know it’s big!)
I have no idea what the backstory is here with Ed Young. But here’s a pastor down at Fellowship Church in Texas who really knows how to handle his bass. I love a good pun, very funny.
1. I’ve never done drugs. But for some reason I’d be willing to bet this would be a stoner’s dream.
2. There is a spiritual metaphor here, just don’t know what it is just yet.
This was a video from our service today. We shot this at Roth Muir. For those not in Romeo this is one of the two funeral homes in town. It was the perfect location for this short video as it drove home our point perfectly.
Services went great today. I’ll probably say more later. But everything from the music to the message to the baptisms made for a very strong Easter Sunday in Romeo.
I actually like the candy covered marshmallow goodness. They are strangely addicting and I am certain that they somehow properly reflect the serious nature of Easter. This video is dedicated the the millions of peeps who have given their lives at the hands of middle schoolers armed with boredom and a microwave.
