  • Go to Haiti this December

As the video says, I’m looking to gauge the interest of a trip to Haiti this December 27th or 28th, 2010 – January 1st or 2nd, 2011. I’m specifically interested in leading a team of church/youth/college leaders who are exploring the possibility of a trip in 2011 or 2012. (Yes, this would be my 3rd trip in 2010… I know, crazy.)

Also, if your church is considering a church partnership with a Haitian church, this would be a great way to see how the partnership works and meet some pastors who are in the program already.

So, we’ll do ministry and meet practical needs with an eye on seeking the Lord’s desire for us to bring a team at a later time. The trip would be run by Adventures in Missions, obviously I don’t work for them but you’ll have the chance to see how they work, ask questions, and really figure out if the trip is the right fit for your ministry. (I love being the connector– that’s all I get out of it!)

If you are interested, please let me know soon. For the trip to work I need 10-15 people to commit in September. Feel free to use the contact page, send me a Facebook message, Twitter direct message, or email me with questions.

I have a lot more information for those interested. And looking for more information is absolutely not committing you to anything.

UPDATE: The trip dates changed by a couple of days. But the intent and everything else is exactly the same. Let me know ASAP if you are interested.

  • Go to Port-au-Prince with me

OK, dear blog reader. It’s time you and I do something to change the world together.

Back in February I shared my trip to Port-au-Prince with you. You saw my joys, sorrows, giggles, and heart-longings. And since that trip I’ve had a strong, STRONG desire to go back. Opportunities have come and gone with the circumstances never quite right.

This is right. This exactly fulfills the vision I had for this trip as our van lumbered out of Port-au-Prince for the day-long drive back to the Dominican Republic to return home in February.

    Some details:

    • July 19-25, 2010
    • Cost is $390 + travel to Port-au-Prince (seems like the flight is about $800 from San Diego, maybe more or less where you live.)
    • The maximum size of the team is 20. I’d like to know who is going by mid-May.
    • The team is open to anyone 21+… whether you know me from church, my work at Youth Specialties, or are a blog reader.
    • This is an adult trip– which means we’ll be a team when we’re together, but it’s not quite the same as a youth group trip!
    • Just like my first trip, this is being put together by Adventures in Missions. I know the team there and some of the people we’ll be working alongside.
    • Kristen is going with me. Though it’s not a “couples” trip this may be an amazing opportunity for a ministry couple to go and do ministry together.
    • Ideally, you have a heart for serving the Haitian church and have been praying for God to open an opportunity for you to go.
    • If you are thinking of leading a team in 2011 and want to go on a preview trip, this is perfect for that.
    • I don’t know 1000% what we’ll be doing every day of our trip. (That will become more clear later) At this point I can only guarantee you that we’ll be doing some type of earthquake relief and working through a local Haitian pastor.

How do you get involved? Shoot me an e-mail, mclanea@gmail.com.

Again, because of the nature of the team this trip is limited to only 20 team members. So if you are interested, it’d be good to contact me right away.

  • 3 Upcoming Things I’m Excited About

I’ve got 3 big things on the horizon which are capturing a ton of my attention. Both the details and the scope of them are great!
    1. In just a few weeks I’m embarking on a road trip up I-5, through California, Oregon, and Seattle. The goal is simple, connect with a bunch of West Coast youth workers, hear what’s going on in their ministries, and share what’s going on at YS these days. Since it’s a youth ministry trip, it’s a low budget deal. Shawn Michael Shoup (my travel buddy) and I will be either crashing at churches, youth workers homes, or sleeping under the stars.
    2. In June, Kristen and I are hosting a 13th anniversary party. It’ll be a small barbeque with some close friends. We’re also going to do a snarky renewal-of-vows type of thing as part of it. More like a celebration of marriage than anything else. As we looked at venues for that we quickly discovered that it’d be better to just rent a beach house for a week, host the barbeque there one evening, and turn it into a staycation. So we think we’ve nailed down the beach house… but still need a contract. It’s kind of funny when you live somewhere that’s a vacation destination.
    3. In July, Kristen and I are hoping to head to Haiti for a week of ministry in Port-au-Prince. Lots and lots of details still to be determined on that. But I’m pretty sure it’s happening.

With the difficulty of 2009 it’s fun to have exciting stuff planned for 2010.

  • Haiti Pictures

I’m just beginning to process this trip. But here are my raw pictures from the field. All of them are available to use under a creative commons license. (Just link back to me, give me credit)
