Figure Skating vs. Ice Hockey

figure skating under attackIn nearby Plymouth, Michigan the local government is discriminating against figure skating. That is, according to some angry moms. The story is that the local government has decided that since hockey pays 300% what figure skating pays for ice time, they are creating more time for ice hockey. [news story]

A couple of thoughts. (Feel free to add your own in the comments)

  1. It’s not discrimination, it’s economics. I’ve not heard the ice skating parents say a thing about “we’ll pay what hockey pays to keep the program alive.
  2. This is hockey town, not figure skating town. The only figure skating legacy Detroit has is Nancy Kerrigan vs. Tonya Harding. (video reminder)
  3. Why is this even a news story? Clearly the Detroit media must have something more important to cover? I can’t believe that this story is still on the news… who are these parents?
  4. Let’s state the most obvious solution. Battle it out. Hockey players vs. Figure skating moms. That would be a cool fight.
  5. Isn’t this really teaching what we all already know? The remote decision makers in the family switch past figure skating as quickly as possible before their wives notice. All of these young figure skaters should just play hockey… thus creating a highly attractive core of women out of Plymouth, Michigan who truly know what men want: Hockey.

I’d love to have your thoughts!

Hey! Don’t forget that Tara Lipinski lived in Bloomfield Hills! Sheesh.

Discrimination – nothing. Let’s see them figure skate with a stick in their hands and several players trying to check them into the boards while they’re trying to do their routine … Then we’ll talk!

Gman, I couldn’t agree more. Figure skating would be interesting if there were some defense involved. Swap out the metrosexual commentators for the guys who do arena football and toss out some ex-NHL stars… then I’d be all over figure skating.

“Trisha sets up for the triple toe, a very difficult move considering Bob Probert is on her tail.”

“I thought she was going to land it. Then Probert took her to the boards. It was a clean hit but I think she’s going to need some stitches.”

To keep things fair… we’d have to put the hockey players in figure skating boots and costumes. 🙂

    I’d like to see that!

High sticking, tripping, slashing, spearing, charging, hooking, fighting, unsportsmanlike conduct, interference, bleeding, roughing… everything else is just figure skating.

Have you ever seen a figure skater get their nose broken by a hockey stick? I sure havent. but I have seen hockey players like me get that happen to them by stupid highstickers. so hockey players really get a lot more beat up than figure skaters so we deserve extra ice time
