Saturday TunesEaster weekend 2009. As Kristen said on her blog, Easter is a completely different experience for us. For the first time in our kids lives we aren’t attached running around the church. The highlight of our Easter celebration, so far, was Thursday night’s Messianic Seder. If ever there was a kinesthetic learning time for a community group, this was it.

Yesterday I had the day off. Another first in my adult life! Kristen went to work in the morning and in the afternoon I drove up to LA to pick up Cathie, Patti‘s daughter. She is here this week thawing out from a long winter and helping us watch the kids on their Spring Break. A win-win! We got back about 8:30 and I think everyone had crashed out by 10:00. This morning, everyone… less Cathie… has crawled out of bed and is quietly going about their business. When Kristen gets back from her hike up Cowles Mountain I’ll be taking Stoney to dog beach for his weekly therepy of ocean and butt sniffing. I’m already looking forward to a great Easter service, a picnic with our refugee friends, and a great week next week.

So that’s my corner of the world this Saturday morning. Here are my next 10 tunes. As always, completely random… ratings included.

Saturday TunesAnother Saturday home with the family. Kids are watching cartoons. Kristen is climbing Cowles Mountain. I’m drinking tea and getting ready to take Stoney to the beach. Just another lazy Saturday!

I’ve been listening to a ton of music in the last few days. So a lot of my ratings are changing and I’m also actively looking to buy more music. Here are the next 10 tunes I’m listening to. As always, completely random and my ratings are included.

#1 Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver *****

#2 Roxanne by the Police *****

    #3 Beautiful Day by U2 *****

#4 Here Without You by 3 Doors Down ****

#5 Rain Down by David Crowder Band ***

  • Things I’m thinking about today

Ever just have a hodgepodge of slush in your mind? Here’s some random thoughts this morning.

    – While I still think of myself as a down-the-middle, maybe even conservative evangelical Christian… I’m finding myself tired of the grey haired leaders.

    – As much as I’d like to say I agree with the complimentarian position of women in ministry, I thinks it’s just a politically correct version of it’s older self. I think you can put me in the egalitarian position of women in ministry, if those are my choices. I think its straight up revisionism, chauvinism, and crazy hermeneutics to say women can’t be elders and pastors in churches. (Conservative brethren allow women to practically serve in these roles, they just call them “directors of ministry” and pay them 50% less. That’s sexism.)

    – Speaking of crazy hermeneutics… I think the rapture was made up by someone who liked science fiction. People argue about a pre-tribulational and post-tribulational rapture of God’s people in revelation. I keep reading the New Testement verses about that, and I have to say I think it was made up. I’m still firmly in the pre-millenial camp, but that whole rapture deal?

    – This year’s American Idol is ridiculous. Paula and that new lady are cheerleaders. Seriously, what is Paula on? Randy isn’t say “dog” nearly enough. And the longer this thing goes,  the more I like Simon. At least he tells the truth.

    – I’m officially addicted to the Travel Channel and the Discovery Channel. I could watch them both 24 hours a day.

    – I’m trying to be more green by taking the trolley to work in April. The mile walk back and forth to the trolley stop won’t hurt me either.

    – I can’t wait for it to warm up a bit more so I can swim at the Kroc Center.

    – The last month has been amazing on the stock market. Seriously, one of my stocks gain 25% just this week.

    – Call me a hypocrite. But I made $1 per share on Ford in the last 2 months. Easy money! I think GM is going out of business in the next 6 weeks. But Ford and Chrysler are going to make it.

    – I wanted to pull an April Fool’s joke on YS, I really did. But after I saw all the online jokes I was glad I didn’t.

    – Speaking of work… I’ve been wanting to run around screaming about how excited I am about new stuff we’re doing. But people there already think I’m nuts so I didn’t.

    – I like my iPhone, a lot.

    – The other day I had dinner with Gary Shell from our church in Romeo. He asked me if I had any regrets about this move. I feel bad about it but I laughed. No regrets. I’m not the kind of leader who second guesses himself much. But I do miss our friends, big time. We are trying to scrape together a plan to go to Detroit in July.

    – Baseball season is upon us, I’m calling it. Cubs win the World Series. 6 games.

    – The kids Spring Break begins today. I doubt we’ll make it through April without a trip to Disneyland.

    – When Jesus told his disciples, “Take up your cross and follow me” before the crucifixtion… what did they think? Is that kind of like U2’s new song, “Get on your boots?”

    – Stoney still hates the water. He’s the only labrador retreiver in the world who won’t swim.

Saturday TunesAnother weekend, already? If it has to be Saturday I will take it. Yet, it hardly seems like a week since my last installment.

Last night we had some friends over for dinner. Chris and Anastasia are very cool and I’m thankful to have them on staff at Harbor dreaming of ways to reach people and bring justice to City Heights. Kristen absolutely went off and delivered one of the most incredible collections of food ever. With a mediteranian theme she made everything from scratch. Homus, pita bread, chicken skewers, salad, and even frozen yogurt. Give that woman a kitchen and some ingredients and she comes to life. All of those years of girl porn have really paid off.

Today we are taking the kids to the zoo for a while. I’ve never been and they have each been a few times. So that will be fun. Have we gotten used to Southern California to the point where we are laid back about going to the San Diego Zoo? I mean, that place is a wonderland of zoology. I’m sure it’ll be fun.

As usual, Saturday kicks off with some quiet time. Everyone is sleeping in and I am quietly listening to some tunes. Here are the next 10 tunes randomly selected on my iPod… er, I mean iPhone.

#1 Sweet Home Alabama by Lynard Skynyrd *****

Saturday TunesAh, Saturday. This was a fast week full of projects, lists, late nights, and dreaming about the future. I would say that I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend… but we’re moving! Needless to say, our Saturday is a little jacked up getting ready for it.

But this morning is simple. A man and his computer. A boy and his cartoons. A girl and sleeping in. Kristen and Stoney are off climbing a mountain. You know… a quiet start to a wild weekend.

Here are the next 10 tunes I’m listening to. As always, these are completely random and my ratings are included.

It’s been a recovery week for me. A lot of extra rest and a lot of extra time spent with Kristen. Today is a continuation of that. Kristen is going off with a friend to La Jolla for a meeting and I’m chillaxing at home with the short people in my life. If we get adventurous we may venture out, but I am thinking we’ll mostly just hang here.

  • Saturday Tunes

I think this is the 50th edition of Saturday Tunes. It may not be the most consistent feature of my blog, but it is one of my personal favorites.

This morning I find myself at my mom’s house in Las Vegas. We needed a car and they had an extra so it worked out. Last night, I took the 40 minute flight from San Diego to Las Vegas. Actually, we sat on the tarmac in San Diego for almost as long as long as our flight because apparently a couple checked in for the flight but couldn’t wait for the plane to take off if you know what I mean. Meanwhile,

On flight 451 to Las Vegas
On flight 451 to Las Vegas

I was sitting in the back of the aircraft with 4 guys who could have come off the set of any Cheech and Chong movie. An early evening flight to Las Vegas is an experience everyone should try… once!

Later this morning I’ll begin my drive back to San Diego. And since I’m alone these are the next 10 songs I’ll be singing down the highway.

#1 Tell Me Something Good the Happy Feet Soundtrack ****

    #2 Spin by Lifehouse ****

#3 Pork and Beans by Weezer *****

#4 Wink and a Smile by Harry Connick Jr. ****

    #5 Beautiful Day by U2 *****

#6 Two Lights by Five for Fighting ****

#7 California Uber Alles by Dead Kennedy’s ****

#8 When I Said I would by Whitney Duncan ****

#9 Sister Rosetta by Noisettes ****

#10 You are Good by Lincoln Brewster ****

Looks like the first hour of my drive is going to be eccectic. Maybe not as odd as the flight last night… How about you? What is on your list this morning?

  • Saturday Tunes

This morning finds me in a hotel in the suburbs of Chicago. Yesterday was a fun day with a ton of driving. We ran all over the city filming Monday’s YS Podcast. Lakeview, the Loop, the Lake, and South Barrington. It’ll be a great episode that I can’t wait to send out on Monday.

Today, I’ll be attending day two of Planet Wisdom Chicago. The first night was great. I had never been to one and I was really impressed. I knew the second session would have a calling to follow Christ and I was interested to see how they did that… loved it. The least manipulative I’ve ever seen and yet dozens of kids responded.

Music is always part of my day. Here are the next 10 tunes rolling off my iPod this morning. As always, no cheating and ratings included.

    #1 Smile by U2 ****

    #2 Baby O’Riley by The Who *****
